Wales Area 8: South Ceredigion: Newquay, Llangrannog and Cardigan Island

CHERISH Project Wales Area 8 Llangrannog

The south Ceredigion coast between Newquay and Cardigan has long stretches of soft-sediment cliffs which, in places, are actively eroding or unstable. This coastline is also rich in archaeology and heritage, home to impressive promontory forts including Castell Bach, Cwmtydu, Pendinaslochtyn coastal fort, Llangrannog and more isolated prehistoric settlements on the small, cliff-fringed Cardigan Island. Coastal villages along this stretch of coast were home to a vibrant shipbuilding industry in post medieval times, and frequent coastal limekilns attest to the importance of the sea and maritime trade in the everyday lives of its population.
