Wales Area 4: Bardsey Island / Ynys Enlli, Gwynedd

CHERISH Project Wales Area 4 Bardsey

A National Nature Reserve managed by the Bardsey Island Trust. Bardsey Island retains a resident population and has been a place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages, focussed on the now ruinous St Mary’s Abbey. The island is also home to archaeological remains of prehistoric open settlement, flint scatters and post Roman settlement. The southern part of the island is low-lying with ongoing erosion at the isthmus, which has exposed prehistoric burials and other remains in the past. The CHERISH project will work with the Trust to build on earlier programmes of erosion monitoring and undertake new research on the island.
